The key to effective cross-cultural communication is knowledge. First, it is essential that people understand the potential problems of cross-cultural communication, and make a conscious effort to overcome these problems. Second, it is important to assume that one’s efforts will not always be successful, and adjust one’s behavior appropriately.
For example, one should always assume that there is a significant possibility that cultural differences are causing communication problems, and be willing to be patient and forgiving, rather than hostile and aggressive, if problems develop. One should respond slowly and carefully in cross-cultural exchanges, not jumping to the conclusion that you know what is being thought and said.
William Ury’s suggestion for heated conflicts is to stop, listen, and think, or as he puts it "go to the balcony" when the situation gets tense. By this he means withdraw from the situation, step back, and reflect on what is going on before you act. This helps in cross cultural communication as well. When things seem to be going badly, stop or slow down and think. What could be going on here? Is it possible I misinterpreted what they said, or they misinterpreted me? Often misinterpretation is the source of the problem
Communication is an important mean of expressing yourself because it exists different ways of expression and so different kind of communication depending on the culture you belong to .
The way of communicating will not be the same as other countries and it is important to know some values of other cultures and so of other ways of communicating for, first of all, avoiding some misunderstandings and then knowing better some aspects of different cultures .
That is why cross-cultural communication is an essential exercise to do; a person who come from a certain country does not necessarily get the same ideas about time, death, identity, as an other one from a different country because each person has its own identity .
First, a national identity, defned by a surname, a first name, citizenship, and a "personal" identity perceived as what are your activities, your opinions about issues or your experience in life .
Sometimes, your own identity can be modified or influenced by different factors, for example religion, your environment, your family.
The latter example seems to be a paradox because you can get your own opinions about something but you can be "influenced" by your familial surrounding or the society where you live(especially some notions that parents and even society teach you when you are a child, as patriotism or nationalism) .
This influence can replace your previous vision of life and changing your way of expressing yourself and so your way of communicating but you can also adapt this influence to your own way of thinking and it can be resulted in a different way of communicating .
In spite of a certain influence coming from a close surrounding, everyone can develop its own identity through its opinions and experience and this is interesting to notice that even within a close group of people, each person get different
1. Communication is a vital tool for self-expression because it encompasses various forms of expression unique to different cultures. The manner in which individuals communicate can differ significantly from one country to another. Understanding the values and communication styles of various cultures is crucial to avoid misunderstandings and to gain insight into diverse cultural aspects.
2. Cross-cultural communication is thus an indispensable practice. A person from one country may not share the same perspectives on time, death, or identity as someone from a distinct nation. This is due to the fact that each individual possesses a unique identity shaped by their nationality and personal experiences.
3. National identity is characterized by surname, given name, citizenship, and personal identity, which encompasses activities, opinions, and life experiences. Personal identity can be shaped or influenced by various factors, such as religion, environment, and family.
4. While it may seem paradoxical, family and societal influences can indeed impact personal opinions. For instance, concepts like patriotism or nationalism are often taught from a young age. These influences can alter one's perspective on life and modify their mode of expression, consequently changing their communication style.
5. However, individuals can adapt these influences to their own thought processes, leading to a unique way of communicating. Despite external influences, each person has the capacity to develop their own identity through their opinions and experiences. It is intriguing to observe that within even closely-knit groups, individuals can have distinct identities.
